Additive Manufacturing (AM), often referred to as 3D printing, is a transformative technology that has been reshaping various industries since its inception. Unlike traditional subtractive manufacturing methods, which involve cutting, drilling, or milling materials to create objects, additive manufacturing builds objects layer by layer from digital designs. This innovative approach has opened up new possibilities in design, production, and customization, making it a cornerstone of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In this purview, the Department of Mechanical Engineering, in association with Department of Chemical Engineering, organized the workshop on “Additive Manufacturing” on 17th, 18th and 21st August 2023. The Workshop was designed to provide insights into the basics and application of Additive Manufacturing. A total of 66 participants (10 faculty members and 56 student members) from Mechanical and Chemical Engineering benefited from this program. Sessions were conducted in the Seminar Hall No. 06. Eminent scholars from premier academic institutes and industries were invited to conduct the session and deliver their domain knowledge and expertise in Additive Manufacturing.

Day 1: 17th August 2023 (Thursday)

Workshop on Additive Manufacturing

Dr. Shrinivas L Gombi, Dean (Academics) welcoming the Chief Guest, Vinod A R

The inauguration of the Workshop began at 10.30 am in Seminar Hall No. 06. Dr. Shrinivas L Gombi, HOD & Dean (Academics) welcomed the Chief Guest, Speakers and all participants to the program and thanked the esteemed management; the Principal of MVJ College of Engineering, Dr. V Suresh Babu; the Vice Principal, Dr. M Brindha and the faculty members of the department.

Chief Guest, Mr. Vinod A R, Scientist D, CMTI, Bangalore called upon the faculty members, research scholars and young students to understand the need for the concepts of Additive Manufacturing in real time smart manufacturing setup. He, further highlighted the significance of additive manufacturing in mechanical engineering. He delivered session from 11.00 am to 01.15 pm.

He laid emphasis on Additive manufacturing, and presented the key highlights of the process that has transformed the way we design, prototype, and manufacture objects. Unlike traditional subtractive manufacturing methods that involve cutting, milling, or drilling materials to create a final product, additive manufacturing builds objects layer by layer, adding material only where it's needed. This innovative approach offers numerous advantages and has a wide range of applications across various industries.

The Day 1 concluded on a happy note with the participants expressing their heartfelt gratitude to the organizers for organizing the informative Workshop on Additive Manufacturing. The students were asked to come up with few examples in manufacturing, where parts can be produced by Additive Manufacturing process.

Day 2: 18th August 2023 (Friday)

The session on Day 2 started at 10.30 am and extended till 01.00 pm with the resource person, Mr. Manjunath B N, Scientist D, CMTI giving a real time exposure on Additive Manufacturing. The resource person gave an exhaustive overview of Additive Manufacturing techniques. He emphasized on the implications of additive manufacturing in real time engineering.
