UG Program – Civil Engineering

The Curriculum of the Civil Engineering course has been framed to meet the NEP (National Education Policy) requirements, by focusing on a holistic approach in the teaching-learning process. The Curriculum has been carefully tailored by experts from Industry and Academia. It offers flexibility to students, in the selection of professional and open elective courses. Multidisciplinary education, one of the salient points of NEP, is fostered through inter, intra and Research / Industrial based internships. Strong emphasis is laid on innovation and research culture.

The 4-year Civil Engineering program consists of 160 Credits, 40 of which are allotted to the First year and 120 to the higher semesters. Professional Core Courses, Professional Core Courses Laboratories, Ability Enhancement Courses, Skill Enhancement Courses, Engineering Science Courses and Basic Science Courses are all incorporated in the Curriculum.

The scheme has nine Professional Core Courses like Geodetic engineering, Strength of materials, Fluid mechanics & hydraulics, Water supply and treatment, Geotechnical Engineering, Concrete technology, RCC structures, Steel Structures, Hydrology and Irrigation Engineering, all of which are integrated with skill-based laboratories.

The Ability Enhancement Courses (AEC) in the Curriculum enhance the professional skill of students, in the fields of Excel and Visual Basic applications, Digital Drafting, Smart urban infrastructure, Total station, Electronics waste management, Smart city, Finance for professionals, Research methodology and IPR, Structural health monitoring, Drone application and AI analysis for structures.

Engineering Science courses like rural and urban planning and architecture, Environmental protection management and Natural disaster management are introduced during the 3rd and 4th semesters, and Basic Science courses on Biology for Engineers in the 3rd semester. Mandatory courses (non-credit) like NSS (National Service Scheme), Physical Education ( Sports & Athletics) and Yoga are also built into the Curriculum. Online Professional Elective and Open Elective courses through online platforms like NPTEL, SWAYAM, MOOCs, have been scheduled for the 8th semester, in order to promote interdisciplinary exposure in fields which are closely associated with Civil Engineering. Multidisciplinary education is one of the important tenets of NEP.

The scheme offers students the provision to get an Honours Degree, by earning extra credits. Social connect and Responsibility, Universal Human Value Courses, Environmental Studies, Mini Project, Mandatory Internships (industry / research) for 14-20 weeks, and Major Project are the value-addition courses in the scheme, to create the holistic engineers envisaged by NEP.
