About the Guest Speaker

Mr.Srinivasan Kola is currently serving as the Engineering Lead at Infosys-Bangalore. He completed his B.E in Metallurgical Engineering from Government College of Engineering, Salem, Tamilnadu, and M.S by Research in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from Indian Institute Technology, Madras. He started his career as an Overhaul and Inspection engineer at HAL Bangalore in the year 2006. In the year 2014, he became the manager of the same division. In the year 2017, he joined Rolls Royce as a Life cycle engineer - Advanced Engineering. He is specialized in inspection for MRO of Adour series of engines, event investigations on Aero engines/coating development on Aero-engine materials (high-temperature materials)/repair development, EBRCA study on nozzle guide vanes, on-wing / near-wing in-situ repair of cold end components, borescope inspection on engine hot-end components, event/failure investigation on aero engines and its materials, evidence-based root cause analysis (EBRCA) and design for service on aero engines. He published more than 10 research papers in most reputed journals and presented many papers in national/international conferences.

Lecture on Defect Investigation and Failure Analysis of Aero Engines

Mr. Srinivasan Kola started his lecture by explaining Aero Engine materials. He spoke about the materials used in gas turbine engine hotspots and cold sections, high energy materials, advanced composite materials, ultra-high temperature ceramics, and the materials used in the thermal barrier coatings. Further, he spoke about the functional material requirements of the combustion chamber, turbine, and nozzles. After a brief introduction about the Aero-engine materials, Mr. Srinivasan Kola started explaining the practices followed by industries to identify the failure in Gas turbine engine components right from the destructive to non-destructive methods. In that, he explained about the baroscopic test, microscopic test, defect investigation, creep, and fatigue identification. After explaining the defect investigation, he explained the methods to solve the investigated defects right from structural modification to replacement of components. Further, he discussed two case studies carried out by him at HAL and Rolls Royce. The first one was about the air crash investigation on bird injection and premature failure of the turbine blade due to overheating/surge and the second one was about the turbine blade failure. Advancements in engine failure analysis, engine health monitoring systems, sensors associated with the failure and defect investigation, overhaul and repair work of aircraft components, and Career in aero industries are some other topics that students were enlightened by the guest speaker.
