A Guest lecture on “Advanced Non-Destructive Testing” was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering on 22nd August 2023 in seminar hall 4. Total 50 Students and 14 Faculty members of the Civil Engineering Department participated in the guest lecture.

The session was related to advanced techniques in reinforced concrete structures (RCC) and their crucial part in ensuring the safety and longevity of vital infrastructures. Concrete, being the backbone of built environment, it demands thorough inspection to identify any potential structural weaknesses. Techniques such as ground-penetrating radar (GPR), ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), and sophisticated imaging technologies without endangering the structure itself. Applications range from high-rise buildings and historic structures to bridges and dams that need to be inspected. By detecting early signs of distress such as corrosion, voids, and cracks, these techniques enable engineers to intervene proactively, mitigating potential risks and extending the lifespan of these essential structures. The main objective of this guest lecture was to provide the information about various advanced NDT methods, underlining their significance in the domain of RCC structures and their pivotal contribution to the safety and sustainability of our urban landscape.

The dignitaries present were Dr. Sapna Devendra, Regional Manager, Ambuja Cements. Ltd., Bangalore; Dr. Suresh Babu V (Principal, MVJCE) and Dr. N. Vetrivel (Head of Civil Engineering Department, MVJCE).

Dr. Suresh Babu V delivered the welcome address and Dr. N. Vetrivel introduced the guest.

Dr. Sapna Devendra, Regional Manager, Ambuja Cements. Ltd. then took over the session. She shared her experiences in the field of advanced non-destructive testing. She illuminated the significance of non-destructive testing methods in civil engineering, emphasizing their role in ensuring the safety, durability, and reliability of various structures, ranging from bridges to high-rise buildings. Her comprehensive insights resonated with the audience, providing a deeper understanding of the challenges and solutions that emerge when evaluating existing structures or monitoring new construction projects.

Students gained valuable insights into the real-world applications of non-destructive testing, both for existing structures' evaluation and the monitoring of new projects.

With practical case studies, Dr. Sapna Devendra illustrated the practicality of advanced non-destructive testing. From ground-penetrating radar to ultrasonic assessment, she demonstrated how these techniques can accurately identify hidden flaws, assess material quality, and gauge structural stability without causing any harm to the structures themselves. Her engaging anecdotes and technical explanations provided attendees with a comprehensive understanding of the methodologies and their on-ground implementation. The vote of thanks was proposed by Prof. Muralidhara R. and Dr. Suresh Babu V, the principal, presented a sapling to the speaker as a token of gratitude.
