Research and Development are playing a critical role in today’s competitive and sophisticated research environment. There has been substantial advancement in research and development of materials, manufacturing, design, thermal and in interdisciplinary research activities.

2nd ICARME - 21 is the information-intensive transformation of research findings in a connected environment of researchers, to facilitate research activitiesin such away as to realize research and development activities in the domain of Mechanical Engineering and allied branches.Data exchange in digital form is pivotal forevolution of new research ideas and it encourages faculty and students to present their research findings, while interacting with fellow researchers across the globe.

With this view, the Department of Mechanical Engineering organized the second edition of the two-day International Conference on Advanced Research in Mechanical Engineering (2nd ICARME – 21), from 29th to 30th April, 2021. This Conference was designed to provide to the participants, insights into state-of-the-art trends and advancements in new materials, digital data exchange in new manufacturing processes, and opportunities and scope for Research and Development in Design and Thermal Engineering. 48 participants (13 from MVJCE and 35 from outside) presented Papers at the 2nd ICARME - 21.

The Conference was conducted in association with Indian Welding Society (IWS), Institution of Innovation Council (IIC), and the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of MVJ College of Engineering. The sessions were conducted online due to the COVID situation prevailing across the world. Eminent scholars from premier academic institutes and opinion-makers from the Industry were invited to deliberate on the latest research topics in Mechanical Engineering. The distinguished dignitaries discussed about new research possibilities in Manufacturing, Materials, Thermal, Design and interdisciplinary domains, and data exchange in the digital world.

Day 1:29th April 2021 (Thursday)

Day 1 started with the invocation song by Miss. MadhuriIyengar, with Miss. BhavanaVeereshGhali and Mr. Uday as MCs. Dr.Vivekanand B Huddar, HoD, Department of Mechanical Engineering, welcomed the Chief Guest, dignitaries, and all the participants, and gave a brief outline of the research activities in the Department. Prof. Sridhar Rao M V presented the schedule of events that were lined up for the Conference. Distinguished Principal of MVJ College of Engineering, Dr. P Mahabaleswarappa, inaugurated the International Conference, highlighting the importance of research and development, and the role of research exchange in latest trends. The Chief Guest of the session was Dr. S A Khan, Professor, IIUM, Kualalumpur, Malaysia. He laid emphasis on the need for research and development and encouraged faculty and students to take up research activities. The inauguration session was attended by faculty members, students of 8th semester, authors of the Papers and eminent professor Dr. M V Reddy, Institute of research Hydro-Quebec, Centre of Excellence in Transportation Electrification and Energy Storage (CETEES), Canada.

The first session of Day1 began with the Keynote Address by Dr. S A Khan. He explained about the flow through nozzle and computational analysis of fluid flow in his address on recent advances in Aerospace Engineering. He discussed in detail about the sudden expansion of flow, both in subsonic and supersonic regimes. He also mentioned that the use of a jet and a shroud configuration in the form of a supersonic parallel diffuser is an excellent application of sudden expansion problems, and is a good research topic for young researchers. He pointed out the fact that there is wide gap between research and quality research, and requested young researchers to pursue quality research.

This session was followed by an invited talk by Dr. Ashok G Matani, Professor, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, Government Engineering College, Amaravati, The Speaker delineated IOT and sensors applications in renewable energy systems optimization. He called attention to the fact that automation is creating plenty of opportunities, and people needs to upgrade to the skills. He highlighted the need for IOT and their application, and opportunities for young researchers to carry out the research on IOT for renewable energy systems. The inaugural Session, followed by the Keynote Address and invited talk have opened up opportunities for the creation of an atmosphere for research and development in the College. It has brought to focus, the need for quality research by the faculty members and has also highlighted the opportunities for faculty members and students to carry out quality research. The session also laid emphasis on the need for keeping oneself updated on latest trends of Electric Vehicles, Industry 4.0, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence and their applications to Mechanical Engineering, for real time Engineering and multidisciplinary innovations, Especially, the talk by Dr. Ashok G Matani on IOT and sensors applications in renewable energy systems optimization has opened up new avenues for students and faculty members of the department to carry out research in the domain of Industrial Internet of Things and the applications of sensors for energy management and evolution of the newer modes of monitoring the energy requirements of the systems.

Overall, the session was well received by the participants and it ended with the briefing of the schedule of events at the 2nd ICARME – 21 by Dr.Vivekanand B Huddar, Professor and Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering.

The forenoon session was followed by the Paper presentation sessions in the four parallel tracks, viz., Track 1 for Manufacturing Engineering, Track 2 for Design Engineering, Track 3 for Thermal Engineering and Track 4 for Materials Engineering. The registered authors of the selected manuscripts presented their Papers virtually, in front of the eminent Session Chairs and other participants, as per the schedule. The Session Chairs from eminent academic institutions and reputed research organizations, reviewed the presentations and gave their suggestions to the authors on the research aspects. The interactions were much appreciated by all the participants.

Overall, 24 Papers were presented on the first day of the Conference, in the four parallel tracks. The Key note Address, invited talk and Paper presentation sessions were well-received by the dignitaries, Session Chairs, researchers from across the country and eminent professors from across the globe. The day ended after the completion of the four technical presentation sessions.

Day 2: 30th April 2021 (Friday)

Day 2 started with an introduction to the proceedings of the second day of the Conference by Dr. Sunil S Waddar, followed by the Keynote Address by Dr. T N Raju, Professor and Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dr.Ambedkar Institute of Technology, Bengaluru, on the latest research trends in battery materials. Dr. T N Raju elaborated on his research findings in the domain of shape memory alloys. He emphasized on the need for newer battery materials and gave an overview of his research findings related to the development, characterization and application of shape memory alloys.

This was followed by the invited talk by Dr.PeerawattNuthanawarawong, King Mongkut's University of Technology North Bangkok, Thailand. He gave an overview of the fabrication of composites, its characterization and applications, especially related to fibre reinforced polymer materials.

The forenoon session was followed by Paper presentation sessions in the four parallel tracks viz., Track 5 for Materials Engineering, Track 6 for Thermal Engineering, Track 7 and Track 8 for Interdisciplinary research topics. The registered authors of the selected manuscripts presented their Papers virtually, in front of the eminent Session Chairs and other participants, as per the schedule. The Session Chairs from eminent academic institutions and reputed research organizations reviewed the presentations and gave their suggestions to the authors on the research aspects. Their interactions went down very well with all the participants.

Overall, 24 papers were presented on the second day of the Conference in four parallel tracks. The Keynote Address, invited talk and Paper presentation sessions were appreciated a lot by the dignitaries, Session Chairs, researchers from across the country and eminent professors from across the globe.

The Paper presentation sessions were followed by the valedictory session. The Chief Guest of the valedictory session was RabindraSah, Chief Engineer - Strategic Projects, Global Practices - Automotive and Industrial Heavy Machinery, Engineering Research & Design, PLM and Digital Enterprise System, Tata Technologies. The Guest of Honour was Dr. M V Reddy, Institute of Research Hydro-Québec, Centre of Excellence in Transportation Electrification and Energy Storage (CETEES), Hydro-Québec, J3X 1S1, Canada. Miss. BhavanaVeereshGhali was the master of ceremonies for the proceedings of the valedictory session. Dr.Anand G welcomed the Chief Guest, Guest of Honour, Principal and all the delegates to the valedictory session.

Dr. M V Reddy, spoke about the latest research avenues in the domain of battery materials and showed keen interest in supporting the Department for research activities, especially those related to Materials technology. Shri. RabindraSah spoke about the need for industry-institute collaborations and incorporation of components required by the industry into the curriculum. He also applauded the conduct of the Conference.

The address by the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour was followed by the valedictory address by our Principal Dr. P Mahabaleswarappa. He presented an overview of the Conference and commended the efforts of the department of Mechanical Engineering, in conducting the International Conference. Dr.Vivekanand B Huddar gave the report of the activities and summarized the proceedings of the Conference, followed by thanksgiving by Prof. Sridhar Rao M V. The Conference was attended by faculty members, research scholars, UG and PG students across several reputed universities and research centres around the country and also from Malaysia, Ethiopia, Thailand, and Canada.

Outcome of the Conference

The Conference has brought to light the opportunities available for our faculty members and students to collaborate and carry out research in topics related to Materials, Manufacturing, Thermal, Design Engineering, and interdisciplinary domains. The Chief Guests, Guest of Honour, Keynote Speakers, and Session Chairs from reputed research institutions have shown keen interest to collaborate with the Department, to help faculty members to carry out research activities. Further, the Conference has provided a platform for the faculty members and students to get their research works published in SCOPUS indexed high impact factor publications of AIP Conference Series and International Journal of Vehicle Structures and Systems (IJVSS).
