The Department of Civil Engineering, MVJCE, organized a 3-day Workshop on Application of GIS in Civil Engineering, from 23rd to 25th February, 2023, in Smt. Rajalakshmi Seminar Hall. The main objective of this event was to encourage students to look beyond their textual knowledge, and co-relate the concepts on Remote Sensing and GIS that they have learnt in the classroom with the practical application of these concepts. 93 students and all the faculty members from the Civil Engineering department participated in this Workshop.

Day 1 (23rd February, 2023) – Morning Session: 10.00 am to 12.30 pm

Course delivery on ‘Application of GIS in Civil Engineering’ by Dr. Devendra Singh Rawat (Scientist – III, National Institute of Rock Mechanics {NIRM}, Bangalore)

Day 1 (23rd February, 2023) – Afternoon Session: 1.30 pm to 4.30 pm

In the afternoon session, the Resource Speaker, Dr. Devendra Singh Rawat, explained about the practical aspects of hydropower projects and industry requirements of GIS in the field of Civil Engineering.

Day 2 (24th February, 2023) – Morning Session: 10.00 am to 12.30 pm

Course delivery on ‘Mapping’ by Dr. Yogendra Singh (Scientist – III, National Institute of Rock Mechanics {NIRM}, Bangalore)

Day 2 (24th February, 2023) – Afternoon Session: 1.30 pm to 4.30 pm

A practical session was conducted in the afternoon, to teach students the practical aspects on morphometric analysis, which is required for Water Resources Management practices in the field of Civil Engineering.

Day 3 (25th February, 2023) – Morning Session: 10.00 am to 12.30 pm

Course delivery on ‘Applications of GIS in Civil Engineering’, by Dr. Nidhi Mishra (Director, Geological Survey of India, Bangalore).

Outcome of the event

This value-added course helped students to understand the practical aspects of GIS, in the Construction industry. The event helped to foster a healthy interaction among the participants. It made them learn and understand the concepts related to GIS, and its application in Civil Engineering. It kindled their ideas, and made them aware of the practical requirements that will make them industry-ready Civil Engineers.
