On October 2nd, on the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Department of EEE, in association with IIT, Bombay, organized a Workshop ‘Gandhi Global Solar Yatra – Student Solar Ambassador Workshop’. This Workshop was conducted at Smt. Rajalakshmi Jayaraman Seminar Hall, between 9.30 am and 2.00 pm. 100 students from 1st and 2nd years participated in this event.
The Student Solar Ambassador Workshop, the seed concept of the Gandhi Global Solar Yatra, aimed to sensitize the young generation, who will be bearing the maximum burden of climate change. Their sensitization, and participation as solar ambassadors in climate mitigation efforts, are important. Therefore, this Workshop was organized to train students and make them aware of the importance of solar energy.
The Workshop began at 9.30 am. The Principal, Vice Principal, HOD (EEE) and teaching and non-teaching staff of EEE Department were present. After the welcome address by the student coordinator, the Principal Dr. Nagaraj Sitaram delivered a speech marking the importance of nonviolence towards our environment, emphasizing on Gandhian principles. The first session of this Workshop focused on the reasons for climate change, and the effects of climate change felt at various places across the globe. The second half of the first session covered the importance of renewable energy, its edge over conventional energy, and the benefits and usage of solar energy.
During the second session, the components needed to assemble a solar study lamp (SoUL) were issued and explained to the students. Before assembling these, they were taken to the open ground, to check the parameters of the solar panel. They checked all the components issued to them (LED, PCB), individually. Faculty members and student volunteers helped the students to assemble the lamp. The trainers explained the future prospects of solar energy to the students.
