The Silver Jubilee colloquium of the Dept of Comp Sc and Engg (UG & PG), was conducted on 25th September 2008, in the Placement Seminar Hall of MVJCE, and it was a grand success. It was delivered by a highly eminent personality, namely, Dr. C Mohan of IBM Almaden Research Center, USA, who is an IBM Fellow and IBM India Chief Scientist. His talk was based on Global Technology Outlook (GTO), which is IBM Research's vision of the future, for information technology (IT) and its impact on industries that use IT. It highlights emerging software, hardware, and services technology trends that are expected to significantly impact the IT sector in the next 3-7 years. His talk was very highly inspiring and informative.
Prof. R.M.O.Gemson, Principal MVJCE extended a warm welcome to Dr.C.Mohan and the audience. Prof K K Mathew , HOD, CSE Dept(UG), welcomed him with a floral bouquet. The Principal, gave a brief introduction of the college as well as the Founder. He highlighted the activities of the college as well as the achievements and the goals. Dr. Swarnalatha R. Rao, HOD, CSE(PG), introduced the speaker to the audience, highlighting his very tall achievements, which are as follows, to name a few:
In 1997, Mohan was named to IBM's highest technical position of an IBM Fellow, for being recognized worldwide as a leading innovator in transaction management. He received the ACM SIGMOD Innovations Award in 1996 in recognition of his innovative contributions to the development and use of database systems. At the 1999 International Conference on Very Large Data Bases, he was honored with the 10 Year Best Paper Award for the impact of his work on the ARIES family of algorithms. In 2002, he was named an ACM Fellow and an IEEE Fellow. In 1992, he was elected a member of the IBM Academy of Technology. Currently, he is a Steering Council member of IBM's Software Group Architecture Board, and a member of IBM's Research Management Council (RMC), Technical Leadership Team (TLT), Asset Architecture Board and Information Management Architecture Board, and a member of IBM India's Senior Leadership Team. He is an alumnus of IIT, Madras and in 2003, he was named a Distinguished Alumnus of IIT Madras from which he received a B.Tech degree. He is a frequent speaker in North America, Western Europe and India, and has given talks in 35 countries.

In his talk Dr.Mohan highlighted the developments in computer Science and Engineering during the past 50 years, highlighting the very significant contributions made by various scientists from IBM, over the years. This information was very inspiring and informative. He said that the 2008 GTO focuses on five topics: Core Computer Architectures, Internet Scale Data Centers , Community Web Platforms, Real World Aware and Enterprise Mobile. Following are some details on some of the GTO 2008 topics.Reinventing the way computers are built-Core Computer Architectures: examines the convergence of technology, hardware and software that will need to evolve to maintain peak computing performance and respond to the changing needs of today’s – and tomorrow’s – business environments. A significant evolution of systems and software across several market segments, cost and power optimized systems, high-end servers and specialized domains will have to occur to take full advantage of these new computer architectures.
He advised the students to indulge in in-depth study leading to innovation and research. Learning should be a continuous process through out one’s life, he said.
Dr. Swarnalatha Rao, thanked him profusely for his thought provoking and highly inspiring talk and presented a memento on behalf of the dept and the college.
A warm vote thanks was proposed by Mr.Srikantha Kumar, Asst. Professor, Dept of Comp. Sc and Engineering.
